Hawaii is known for many things, some of which are cliche, however, there is a deep significance for each.
Yoga is a special practice in and of itself. It embodies the highest potential of the human condition to expand and unify with all that is above, that is below, that is situated within and without, indeed yoga brings us to ourselves in a way which leaves us without words.
The Hawaiian landscape holds a presence, an energy that locals refer to as “aloha.” It can not be explained but can be felt, and at best it may be described as a melting away of ego into the vastness that is so embodied by the oceanic nature of Hawaii.
When you practice yoga on the earth, the energies of the earth, electromagnetic fields, connect to you own. There is a subtle communion and in fact a deep resonance, this is due to the fact that despite a modern lifestyle, we human beings are essentially part of nature.
Pure air from Ocean breezes which has traveled thousands of miles along with their counterpart waves, lull you into a deep state of existence. Wildlife occasionally makes their presence known….whales breach, monk seals rest, and life seems to attend to a great rhythm.
This is why dance preserved the Hawaiian connection with nature, and this is how yoga opens your chakras or spiritual centers to be receptive to the gifts which the island brings you.
Yoga is traditionally practiced at sunrise and at sunset for these are times when the energetic forces of the Earth are at their maximum. Yoga is also practiced on the Earth by yogis for centuries to draw the electromagnetic power of the Earth up into the spine for the opening of the “chakras” or energy centers.
Sound Space Yoga classes are a multi-level class, which means they are open and available for all people, body type, and skill level regardless of previous experience. Enjoyable for the beginner and challenging for the advanced.
Classes are held regularly on the beautiful ocean side of Kauai with the rising sun in morning and setting sun in the PM.
Gentle postures for opening up the body and warming up the muscles and joints are followed by the salute to the sun, which it is the beginning of the traditional yoga practice through which a practitioner comes to unite the polar opposites of the world within themselves – the sky and the earth, the sun and the moon, the breath and the body.
The class then goes through series of postures (asanas) in each of the four categories: standing, prone, supine, and sitting to make a complete practice followed by deep relaxation and oneness with the Earth. All the while the teacher facilitates the concepts behind the poses relating to the physical (alignment), mental (focus and awareness), and spiritual (becoming the pose).
Yoga is truly an individual journey and each class next to the ocean in Kauai is indeed a journey toward greater and greater intimacy with the beautiful island itself and with oneself as a part of the land, breath, and the interconnectedness of all life.
Yin is half the mystery of life which is an ebb and flow of tides turning, and opposites balancing the great forces of nature. Yoga itself is yin in nature, it is deeply relaxing, restorative, prolongs life, leaves one feeling energized, and balanced. This is because there is a vast difference between yoga and exercise which excites the system, does not move into a mind-body balance and may create stress within the body.
Yogis have practiced for centuries yogic practices to prolong life and ensure good health and also for spiritual realization. All yoga is done meditatively, with awareness, without stress or strain, and is therefore yin.
Modern practitioners, however, challenge the body physically to gain the results they desire related to body image, shape, size and appearance. Thus they have termed the word yin yoga to refer to those practices which emphasize deeper relaxation into poses, holding longer each poses, deeper breath awareness, and postures which do not move in a continuous flow.
Yin is a term from Chinese medicine and is never used alone. Always yang will be present in some form as the two cannot exist without the other. Similarly, yoga, in its true form and practices as traditionally practiced, will complement any other style of yoga practice and exercise and the rewards will be great for finding a way to deepen one’s inner connection.
Yoga asana is a practice of postures, and yogic breathing is called pranayama. Therapeutic yoga is a systematic approach to use the major joints and muscles of the body in coordination with the breathing practices to stimulate the body’s own repair network. This activation of core energy, life, force, and vitality comes from the brain and central nervous system through the limbic and endocrine system where energy is released from psychosomatic emotional centers and as well hormone signals are released from the brain center.
Each individual has a body which is unique, therefore therapeutic yoga moves are gentle ways that allow each person to find their own approach and capacity. Chair yoga is started and then standing actions for strength, balance, poise, clarity, and inner power. Then floor movements tone digestive organs, help remove toxins, and also help to prevent common conditions which arise such as back pain.
Deep relaxation is pivotal for getting the deepest benefits of yoga so ancient toning techniques are done to systematically bring all hormonal stress levels down to the physiological baseline. At this point, the bodies own restorative energies will start to work to repair and rebuild.
Yoga is traditionally experienced under the guidance of an advanced teacher thus there are incredible benefits of a private yoga session with Abhirama who has studied and trained directly under yoga masters since 2002. He will tune in to exactly your needs on any of the levels which yoga addresses known as the five bodies or kosha. Utilizing the ancient techniques from multiple traditions, come into your full potential exactly right for your body in a peaceful and supportive environment, much different from the group class. A private session is a place to discover a deeper part of yourself through the facilitation of an advanced teacher and practitioner. It is also the place to utilize all the tools and props necessary to realize the deepest benefits of each pose, guided with care by the caring teacher. Take an additional step towards greater transformation by incorporating the Amethyst Bio-Mat into your session, check out the BIo Mat page to learn more about its amazing benefits.
